Chapter Fourteen

Kali

“Damn, you’re going to kill me.”

At my words, Dante rolled off me, but I moved with him, not wanting to disconnect at all. He placed his arm around me and pulled me closer to his side. I snuggled against him, feeling safe within his arms. I can’t believe I didn’t call him while I was gone. He could have moved on. I could have missed an opportunity. The fact he didn’t, told me maybe he felt something more about those two nights we were together too.

“You okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, more than okay.” Gospel truth.

He kissed my forehead.

It was such a sweet thing to do. If I wasn’t already into this man, I would have been right then.

“Let me get rid of this.” He gestured between his legs. “I’ll be right back.”

I got under the covers and stared at the ceiling, yet not really seeing it, but trying to gather the thoughts bouncing around in my head. Trying to make sense of it all. What the hell just happened between us? Holy fuck! It was good.

The other times hadn’t been a figment of my imagination. I thought it was maybe, because of all the love vibes weddings give off. But no. Ever since I last saw Dante, I hadn’t been able to get him out of my head. I came back to New York hoping to see him again. Wondering if that connection we’d shared affected him the same way. Yeah, I’d been wondering and wanting him.

I turned when he sat down on the bed and pulled back the cover. The mattress dipping as it took his weight, he dropped some gold packets on his nightstand. I lay in the center of the bed, so he slid right up to me and wrapped me in his embrace again, then kissed my temple. We lay our heads on the same pillow, staring at each other. He placed a hand on my hip, stroking me lightly in an absentminded manner. I rested my palm against his chest, wanting to feel his heart beat; it slowly returned to a normal rhythm.

“I really did miss you. And I don’t miss girls—ever.”

He sounded more amused than annoyed, so I smiled at him. “I find that hard to believe. What about Ivy? I know she was your roommate and your dance partner and that you guys are close. Don’t you miss her?”

He laughed. “Yeah, but that’s different. And besides, she’ll be back from her honeymoon in a couple of days. So, it’s all good.”

“But you do miss her?”

“Okay, yes.”

I grinned. “There, see? You can miss a girl.”

“Not even close to the way I missed you.” Something intense flashed in his eyes when he stated that.

I stopped grinning. “Dante, what are we doing? Me. You. What’s going on here?”

He raised his hand and threaded his fingers through my hair. “I haven’t a clue. Beyond wanting to be with you. Wanting to spend time with you, get to know you better. Just wanting.”

“Me too. So, what are we going to do about that?”

“I think we’re doing it actually.
